Frequently Asked Questions

We want to make sure our sunscreen is perfect for you! Here are the most common questions:

1) Is your sunscreen safe for kids?
Yes! We use it on our own children (6 months and up) because we believe in only the best protection for little ones.

2) Does your sunscreen contain nano-particles?
No. Our formula is non-nano, making it compliant with Hawaii’s reef-safe regulations.

3) How do you know it’s boat safe?
We tested multiple formulas over 18 months. Our final version was left on various boat surfaces for three months, with no staining on gel coat, plastic, or powder coat—even in real-life boating conditions.

4) Does your sunscreen have fragrance?
No added fragrance. This is essential for anglers, as scents can deter fish, and also ideal for those with fragrance sensitivities.

5) Does your sunscreen go on clear?
No. It leaves an ultra-light, barely visible white finish when dry—one of the least noticeable mineral sunscreens available. True mineral sunscreens must create a physical barrier to reflect UV rays, which means they won’t go on clear. Our formula is designed for the best cosmetic appearance while maintaining reef-safe integrity. When wet, it may appear slightly whiter, with some users noticing a faint blue hue.

6) I have a darker complexion—how much white cast will I see?
Our formula has one of the lightest white casts on the market, but darker skin tones may still notice some. The trade-off? Superior durability and protection in water and extreme sun. We use only the highest-quality non-nano zinc oxide for the best possible application.

7) How do you know it’s bait safe?
We tested our sunscreen over hundreds of hours of fishing—even with sensitive live shrimp—without harming bait.

8) Is it sweat and water resistant?
Yes! Our sunscreen is highly water-resistant (80 minutes) and won’t run into your eyes. Tested in extreme conditions—offshore fishing, surfing, hiking, and more—it stays put and protects you.

9) Where is your sunscreen made?
Developed in St. Augustine, FL, and bottled in an FDA-approved facility in Miami, FL—proudly made in the USA.

10) Will it stain clothes?
Because mineral sunscreens sit on top of the skin rather than absorbing, some residue may transfer onto clothing. Most stains wash out easily.

11) Is your sunscreen approved for use in Hawaii, Mexico, and other countries?
Yes! Many so-called "reef-safe" sunscreens don’t actually meet local requirements. We carefully formulated our sunscreen to comply with Hawaii’s Act 104, Mexico’s eco-regulations, and other marine-sensitive areas. We even consulted resorts and organizations in these regions, and they approved our ingredients for use.

12) Why does your formula include both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide?
Using both minerals provides superior sun protection. Zinc oxide offers broad UVA & UVB defense, while titanium dioxide enhances short-wave UVB protection. Additionally, too much zinc can clog pores and trigger breakouts. By adding titanium dioxide, we ensure a lighter, smoother application that’s great for all skin types.

13) Will it leave a white residue on facial or body hair?
Like all mineral sunscreens, it may leave some white residue on hair. With thorough rubbing, it blends better, but body hair makes full absorption difficult. This is a natural trait of mineral sunscreens.

14) Is your mineral sunscreen hard to spread?
We’ve crafted one of the smoothest-applying mineral sunscreens by using only the highest-quality ingredients in the perfect balance. While it requires more effort than chemical sunscreens, it rubs in well for a light, comfortable finish.

15) Who developed your sunscreen?
Our founder is a doctor and three-time head and neck cancer survivor. After intense radiation, they needed a high-performance sunscreen to prevent sunburns that could cause serious skin damage. As an avid offshore fisherman, they spent 18 months developing and testing a superior mineral sunscreen—and Hook Ya was born.

16) Why choose a mineral sunscreen over a chemical sunscreen? Studies show that chemical sunscreen ingredients can enter the bloodstream within hours of application and remain in the body for up to 21 days. The body must process and eliminate these chemicals, which may put unnecessary strain on your system. Many chemical sunscreen ingredients are under scrutiny for potential hormone disruption and environmental harm. Some have even been detected in human breast milk and urine samples.
